Training in essential skills
Your support recently helped fund two essential skills training mannequins for the hospital's oncology and critical care units. These sophisticated training tools allow clinicians to practise and perfect procedures in a safe, controlled environment before working with real patients.
In the oncology unit, the mannequin is used for training on NG tube insertion, tracheostomy care, port access and subcutaneous injections. It's also proving invaluable in teaching parents how to administer care before discharge. The PCCU mannequin comes with its own monitor to track vital signs and a control panel that trainers can use to change breathing rate and pulse, creating life-like scenarios.
PCCU practice educator, Carris Bude, said: "In critical care there's no margin for error. We need to ensure every member of staff is skilled and knows how to react individually and as part of the wider team. A child's condition can change very quickly and there are often multiple things happening at once. This technology allows us to mimic different scenarios in the most life-like way possible, giving everyone from a newly qualified nurse to an experienced consultant the best opportunity to learn, practise and improve their practice."
